Wayland Academy announced today that Ellie Aplin is the 15th recipient of the annual Mary Swan Scholarship. The Swan Scholarship, established in 2004, is a renewable four-year full scholarship for a day student to attend Wayland, an independent college preparatory high school in Beaver Dam.
Aplin, an eighth grader at Beaver Dam Middle School, is the daughter of Robert and the late Elizabeth Aplin of Beaver Dam. On a recent visit to Wayland Academy's Swan Library she met with and received the congratulations of Wayland's Associate Dean of Admission Lindsay Knaup H`15 and John B. McKinstry H`10, a lifelong friend and Trustee of Miss Swan, who interviewed the scholarship finalists. McKinstry was pleased to welcome a student of Aplin's caliber to the Wayland student body. In addition to being an outstanding scholar, Aplin is a vocalist with the Middle School Jazz Choir and participates in the annual Solos and Ensembles competition. She enjoys science, English, and writing classes.
Current Swan Scholars Easton Meier `18, Savannah Schreiner `19, Tia Thomas`20, and Aryanna Oestriecher `21 were also present to congratulate Aplin. Students shared how the Swan Scholarship and the opportunity to attend Wayland Academy has provided one-of-a-kind academic challenges to prepare them for their post-secondary educations.
Miss Swan, a 1925 graduate of Wayland who passed away in 2003, and her family were generous patrons of education in Beaver Dam. In addition to the Wayland Swan Scholarship, Miss Swan sponsored educational scholarships through the Beaver Dam High School Scholarship Committee and the Beaver Dam Scholarship Foundation. McKinstry described Miss Swan as a philanthropist determined to use her intellectual resources as a teacher as well as her material resources to open doors for many generations of students.
Prospective students and their families are welcome to attend an Open House at Wayland Academy from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 7. Activities that day include a preview of Wayland's challenging and supportive atmosphere, campus tours, class visits, admission interviews and more.
